Jozankei

Jozankei Gorge is a great spot for a stroll through the autumn leaves.

Only an hour's drive from the center of Sapporo, you can enjoy beautiful autumn leaves through the valley. Jozankei is the valley of the Toyohira River, that has its headwaters behind the Houheikyo Dam. Jozankei is the mother river that runs through the center of Sapporo.
In the olden days the monks of Higashi Honganji Temple manually excavated the road of Nakayama Pass (Honganji Road) from present day Date City to Sapporo City to cultivate Hokkaido and they discovered a hot spring. That hot spring was named after the monk Jozan Osho who found the hot spring which became Jozankei Onsen. The monk's statue can be seen in the front yard of the Jozankei Onsen Hotel.

Please check out Jozankei Onsen walking MAP. The journey is about 5km long, and takes about 80 minutes to walk. The starting point is the Tourist Association. ① Pass through Jozankei Gensen Park and heaad towards ③ Futami Tsuribashi Suspension Bridge. It is a wonderful place to see the autumn leaves. Then you will pass through Iwato Kannondo and see the popular cafes "Gake no Ue (cliff top)" and "Ame no Hi to Yuki no Hi (Rainy day and Snowy day)". ④ Head down near the riverside and look up the valley from "Maizuru no Toro" the natural water pool.

Please check out Around Jozankei walking MAP. The way to enjoy Jozankei is not limited to hot springs and cuisine, but also walking around Jozankei during the autumn leaf period to get a true sense of the season, and if you go a little further, you can see Lake Sapporo and the Kokusai Ski Resort gondola at the rear of the lake. You can also enjoy the breathtaking autumn leaves at the Houheikyo Dam.
