A central point for sightseeing in Southern Hokkaido, including Hakodate, Matsumae, and Esashi / A city on the Hokkaido Shinkansen route / The Midwinter Misogi Festival / Sajagawa Shrine / South Hokkaido Railway / Delicious local sake / Hakodate Wagyu Beef
Kikonai, known for its sacred “Midwinter Misogi” ritual where participants plunge into the Tsugaru Strait, serves as a key transportation hub and crossroads for Southern Hokkaido tourism. It connects to popular destinations such as Hakodate City, Esashi Town (a designated Japan Heritage site), and Matsumae Town, famous for its cherry blossoms and castle.
Southern Hokkaido was the first region where Japanese settlers established permanent residence and engaged in trade with the indigenous Ainu people, marking the beginnings of Hokkaido. It is also a historically significant area, as it was the site of the final battle of the samurai—the Battle of Hakodate.
Kikonai Station, the first stop on the Hokkaido Shinkansen, will soon be directly connected to Sapporo Station. Historically, the people of Kikonai rescued the stranded crew of the Kanrin Maru, who were retainers of Shiroishi Castle under the Sendai Domain. These survivors later contributed to the development of Shiroishi Village, which is now the Shiroishi Ward of Sapporo.
Exploring these historical connections on foot is a fascinating experience. We will introduce key areas such as Kikonai’s downtown, the Satsukari and Saraki areas, and Tsuruoka Park.
<Mascot, Ki-Ko>
Kikonai’s official mascot, is based on the Japanese Brown Hakodate Wagyu beef specially produced in Kikonai. Usually he can be found working in the station master’s office as the station master of Kikonai Station shinkansen tourism, however he is also active in promoting Hakodate Wagyu beef and various events. He specializes in MOOtivation. He can sometimes appear dim-witted.

The traditional Shinto ritual of Kikonai where we pray for a good catch and a good harvest. 4 young pupils clutching 4 Goshintai (objects of worship) dive into the extremely cold Tsugaru Strait, purifying the Goshintai. The ceremony is held from January 13th to the 15th every year.
The Saraki Cape Tulip Fair is held at Saraki Cape, known for the birth of the Kanrin Maru, where thousands of tulips, recognized as the national flower of the Netherlands, bloom in splendor.
The Kanrin Maru, which played an active role in the late Edo period and achieved the first trans-Pacific crossing, ran aground and sank off the coast of Saraki Cape in Kikonai cho. It still rests in the sea of Kikonai today. This festival, themed around the Kanrin Maru, energizes Kikonai in midsummer with various events.
Fresh seafood, mountain delicacies, and other specialty products from Kikonai cho are sold at special prices.
