Occurrence of the longest sacred ice (Omiwatari) in Japan

Sacred ice (Omiwatari) is a natural phenomenon that occurs in early spring. As temperatures rise, the frozen surface of the lake begins to melt, and the expansion of ice from the cold lakebed repeatedly causes the surface to bulge in lines. This bulging is believed to be the ‘footprints of the gods crossing the lake,’ and the phenomenon is interpreted as a mystical event.
