A port town on Uchiura Bay and Mount Komagatake of HokkaidoMori Machi is a nature-rich town close to Mt. Komagatake of Hokkaido and Uchiura Bay which are landmarks of the Southern Hokkaido district. Just beyond the coast lies a lush green zone of forests and woodlands. For example, the “Torizaki Hakkei” (Eight Scenic Views of Torizaki) along the Torizaki River features dynamic, untouched natural scenery and is symbolic of Mori Machi’s charm. The curved shape of Uchiura Bay makes it a natural harbor. So calm is the water that, during the late Edo period, the former shogunate army led by Enomoto Takeaki landed in Mori Machi from Edo to launch an attack on Goryokaku.
The nutrients carried from the mountains enrich the sea, yielding a bounty of fresh seafood like scallops, Alaska pollock, horsehair crab, and botan shrimp. Many gourmet enthusiasts are devoted fans of Mori Machi.
It’s about a one-hour drive from Hakodate. Visit Mori Machi for activities that let you enjoy its lush green forests, blue sea, delicious cuisine, and abundant nature. Squid rice (ikameshi)? That’s another Mori Machi specialty!
