Most of the mountains in Hokkaido are volcanically active and have unique mountain shapes. As many as nine of Japan’s 100 most famous mountains are located in Hokkaido. There are few places where you can walk along a long ridge line, and there are few long approaches. Therefore, climbers can begin their ascent directly from the parking lot and reach the summit area in a short time. It is popular among backcountry enthusiasts.
Because of the many effects of volcanic activity, high-quality hot springs are gushing out of the mountain. Mountain climbing and sightseeing, Hokkaido is truly a mecca for mountain climbing tourism. In Honshu, alpine flora and coniferous forests are said to start at altitudes of 2000m. Due to high latitude weather conditions, the mountains of Hokkaido have ridges starting at around 600m above sea level, and alpine flora can be enjoyed even at around 1000m. In other words, even a 1000m peak in Hokkaido is a 2000m peak in Honshu. Even in summer, you can encounter lingering snow and alpine flora even at low altitudes. The appeal of hiking in Hokkaido includes the Blakiston Line, an animal distribution boundary along the Tsugaru Strait. This line marks the southernmost range for certain animals that don\u2019t inhabit Honshu. Notable animals found in Hokkaido but not in Honshu include the Ezo brown bear, Ezo deer, red fox, long-tailed tit, Ezo chipmunk, pika, Blakiston’s fish owl, Siberian flying squirrel, and black woodpecker. These unique wildlife encounters, such as combining hiking with birdwatching or wildlife viewing, are among the reasons why Hokkaido\u2019s hiking tourism attracts worldwide interest.<\/p>

Hiking in Hokkaido often brings you into the habitat of these unique animals, and special caution is needed for the Ezo brown bear. If bear sightings are reported, trails may be closed. In October, autumn foliage begins to change here and there in Hokkaido. Naturally, the higher elevations and latitudes are earlier. Snow begins to fall on the remaining summer snow from late October to early June. Moiwa Day, and the mountain is beloved by Sapporo citizens. 100 species of trees, 120 species of birds, and several thousand species of insects and animals can be observed. The summit can be reached by ropeway and lift.

The trail is quite difficult due to uneven stones and tree roots. Trekking shoes are recommended. If the weather is clear, Mt. Yotei can be seen from the summit (the mountain is prone to cloud cover). There is also a climbing route from Onsen-juku Ikoi. A traverse from Annupuri to Iwaonupuri to Nitonupuri is also popular.

Before the eruption, it is said to have been a 1,700-meter-high, Fuji-shaped mountain (Watashimafuji). There are 19 Komagatake peaks in Japan. The only trailhead is the Komagatake route from Morimachi. It is 6.4km long, takes about 2.5 hours, and has an elevation gain of 670m.

Mount Hakodate is the collective name for 13 mountains: Gotenyama, Yakushiyama, Tsutsujiyama, Shiomiyama, Hachimanyama, Mizumotoyama, Kurakakeyama, Jizoyama, Irieyama, Ezodateyama, Kannonyama, Ushinobashiyama, and Senjojiki, which has an observation deck and is called Gagyuyama because it appears to have a cow lying down on it. There is a ropeway to the summit.

It is a strenuous climb requiring stamina, with steep climbs at the 2nd and 3rd stations at the beginning and around the 7th and a half station in the latter half of the trail. Near the summit, the trail climbs three humps: Mt. Itto, Mt. Nito, and the summit of Mt. Santo.

\nAttractions<\/b>: It is popular as the entrance mountain to Daisetsuzan National Park. Kurodake ski resort, located halfway up the mountain, offers the longest ski season from November to May. Kurodake is popular even among beginners as it offers a real mountain climbing experience. From Kurodake, you can traverse to the Daisetsuzan mountain range, which can be enjoyed many times. The trail ascends and descends on natural steps of large rocks. Trekking shoes, not athletic shoes, are recommended. It takes about 2 hours for a round trip from the 7th station, about 3.4km, with a height difference of 520m.
